Is it safe to set the date?
On most mechanical watches, using the date quick-set between about 9pm and 3am can damage the date mechanism. Tell us what the hands show and we'll tell you if it's safe.
The window varies by movement; some start as early as 8pm. When in doubt, move the hands to 6:30 before touching the date. Your manual has the exact range.
The safe way to reset a stopped watch
- Pull the crown to the time position and set the hands to 6:30.
- Push in to the date position and set the date to yesterday.
- Pull back out and turn the hands forward through midnight until the date jumps to today.
- Carry on to the correct time and push the crown home.

The quick-set pushes the date disc against a part that is already engaged with it. That can bend or break a tooth, and the date may stop changing properly until the watch is repaired.

You can't tell from the hands. Set them to 6:30, set the date to yesterday, then turn the hands forward until the date changes; that moment is midnight.
Does the danger zone apply to quartz watches?
